Liturgy of the Hours
Project Description
The Liturgy of the Hours has been central to Catholic worship for centuries, yet its complexity in navigating multiple prayer books, ribbons, and liturgical calendars has created a barrier for new practitioners. Commissioned by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, DC, and set to accompany an updated translation of the original text, the app restructures the prayer experience to be accessible without sacrificing reverence. By surfacing daily prayers, including proper observances for saints' memorials and commons, the app eliminates confusion while preserving familiar elements. The design prioritizes the prayer text itself, following the traditional layout and typography. The multiple ribbons are replaced by a minimal section marker, making it easy to follow along without losing your place. Audio accompaniment for every prayer allows readers to corporate prayer, even when praying alone. The result is an interface that honors the liturgical tradition while making the practice genuinely accessible to modern worshippers.
